Chapter Eight

Ken

A few weeks later…

“Kenny, where do you think you’re going?” she called down the stairs after him, her voice as airy and fragile as cotton candy. Ken paused to look up at his mama. It wasn’t even sunset yet and she was already dressed in her matching pink robe and slippers.

She peered down from the banister, both her dainty hands wrapped around the stem of a wine glass that never went empty…even though she’d been carrying it from room to room through the house all day.

Ken didn’t let himself think too much on that. He had his own escape to make. One that would end with him in the arms of a man that loved him rather than hiding empty bottles in the recycling.

“Don’t you remember, mama?” he asked, kind as he could manage, while finished putting on his tennis shoes. Ken was in a rush, he was already late to meet Harley, so he didn’t bother undoing the laces. He shoved his feet inside and pulled at the tongues before standing up straight. “I’m meeting a friend.”

His mama squinted her eyes. “A girl?”

“A friend,” Ken repeated. The lie hurt. Harley was so much more than his friend. Harley was…he was everything to Ken.

His first thoughts of the day were about Harley and so were his last thoughts of the day before he slipped off to sleep. Their feelings for each other might have been a secret from the rest of the world, but Ken knew the truth.

“I don’t like this. You being out so late. It’s not right,” his mama spoke down at her wine glass. “You’ve changed, Kenny.”

Guilt began to nibble at him, but Ken refused to let himself be swallowed by it. He wouldn’t let his mama make him feel that way.

“Mama, please?” he asked with sorry eyes. “I’m not in high school anymore. I don’t need a curfew.”

“But you’re still our boy,” she insisted, “and it doesn’t look good to have you going out and coming back at all hours of the day. And night too. The neighbors are talking, Kenny.”

So? Who the hell cared what they thought about him living his life?

Ken breathed in deeply and chewed on his tongue to keep his true feelings inside his mouth. Like Ken always did, he slapped a smile on his face.

“I’ll be back before midnight, mama.”

She called out to him agains, but Ken didn’t listen to her. He couldn’t stop. Not when Harley was out there waiting for him.

Ken rushed out of his home, eager to go back to the only place he truly felt understood and loved and safe: held down underneath Harley’s body and embraced in those strong arms.

Harley

The diner was busy. All the summer festivities had brought in plenty of folks looking for work and the Plumtree was a cheap place to fill up one’s belly when one’s pockets were light. Harley paid no mind to the crowd.

It was a nice change of pace to see the place packed. Besides, he wouldn’t be here for long.
